The Tijuana city government, under Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, has opened preregistration for a new initiative designed to speed up daily border crossings for residents who live in Tijuana and work in the United States. Known as the Agile Crossing Program, the plan aims to cut commute times and improve quality of life for cross-border workers by providing access to dedicated fast lanes.
The program was announced by the city’s Department of Economic Development (SEDETI). Eligible commuters will be able to use expedited lanes at select border crossings. Preregistration is now available through the official website.
Pedro Montejo Peterson, head of SEDETI, said the program is intended for Baja California residents who can verify employment in the U.S., hold a valid American work visa, and regularly cross the border for work.
Applicants are required to submit a current official ID, proof of Baja California residency, documentation of U.S. employment, a valid U.S. work visa, and vehicle information for up to two cars with current Mexican or U.S. plates. Personal references are also required.
Montejo Peterson explained that the process will move through several stages, beginning with preregistration, followed by document review and evaluation. Each phase will have set processing times to keep the system orderly and transparent.
Each approved registration will allow participation for up to four people—one primary user and three additional users—and up to two vehicles. Access is strictly personal and non-transferable, in accordance with program guidelines.
SEDETI officials also warned residents to rely only on official channels and cautioned against making payments or submitting documents through third parties.
City officials say the program reflects a broader effort to ease cross-border mobility, reduce daily travel times, and support economic activity in the border region.
