Tijuana authorities will step up security around Catholic churches on December 12 as thousands of worshippers gather to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The city’s Department of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPCM) will deploy an expanded, citywide operation that includes additional officers stationed near churches where the largest celebrations and early-morning masses are expected. The goal, officials said, is to support crowd movement, manage traffic, and prevent incidents during one of the most important religious gatherings of the year.

The reinforcement is part of the broader holiday security plan already underway in the city. As part of that effort, the SSPCM will also rely on its video-surveillance system to monitor activity and assist officers on the ground, allowing them to respond quickly to any situation. Officials noted that patrol officers will be available throughout the day to help residents who need assistance.
Authorities reminded the public that emergency calls can be made through 911, as well as through the “Botón de Emergencia” and “Botón Morado” mobile apps, which connect users to police support.

The SSPCM urged worshippers attending early-morning services to take basic precautions, including keeping track of personal belongings and staying attentive to children or other companions. The agency said these measures help prevent incidents that could disrupt the celebrations for families.
Officials also encouraged residents to follow traffic instructions around churches and to drive responsibly during the festivities, emphasizing that avoiding impaired driving is critical during the holiday season. Police said they will remain on alert throughout December as part of the city’s broader Christmas security operation.
