Tijuana will become the first city in Latin America in switching from an analog TV system to a purely digital TV system said the federal telecommunications commission (Cofetel). The analog blackout will take place on Tuesday May 28 of this year.

As of now more than 192,000 homes already have the descrambler or digital antennas. For those who don't, they'll be able to to go to the municipal palace (city hall) or the offices of their TV provider. Cofetel indicated that 90% of homes already have digital television capability.

The change would allow certain benefits like better picture and sound quality, an increase in the channels available, and much more. It was originally planed for this change to happen on April 16 of this year, but it was not until now that the necessary testing was complete.

Where can you find a digital descrambler or antenna?

A special census was conducted in October of last year o determine how many home would be affected by the switch. It was determined that a lot of home already had in place all that was needed for the digital take over. And those who didn't would receive free government assistance. The company Teletec was the one in charge of the necessary installments so the digital TV could reach the majority of citizens.

For those who have a paid television service, you'll be able to just go to their offices an receive the necessary converter. Or if you have a newer model television with the latest technology like LED, then you are all set for the digital take over.
