Tijuana’s Election for Mayor is in a Virtual Triple-Tie

Even if abstentionism remains high in Baja California, where the voter turnout was less than 35% in yesterday’s election, the day ended with three Tijuana candidates for mayor virtually tied in the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP), claiming an early advantage before the preliminary count was over.



The National Action Party (PAN) candidate Juan Manuel Gastélum is still ahead of the other contenders with 84% of the counted and registered ballots PREP. Still, its advantage against the other leading candidates, René Mendívil of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Julián Leyzaola of the Social Encounter Party (PES), is of only 1%.



Yesterday’s elections in Baja California, where mayors and congress representatives were chosen all over the state, resulted in a very close competition for the PAN, PES and PRI parties; PAN has 78,639 vote, 21.3% the total; PRI holds 75,502 vote, representing 22.20% of the votes; finally, PES has 75,170 votes, a 22.11% of the total. These results suggest that the winning candidates will be decided by a tribunal official after the preliminary and official count ends.



Last night, both PRI and PAN cancelled their scheduled press conferences after it was hard to determine a definitive trend after counting 20% of the ballots, even with PAN’s candidate Juan Manuel Gastélum minimal advantage.

The number of candidates was unprecedented in Tijuana, partly due to the presence of independents, but even then, some polling stations reported that not even a fourth of their eligible voters has cast their ballots near closing time.
