For the second time in a row, Tijuana has topped the list for having the most expensive basic food basket in Mexico. This time, the Bodega Aurrerá located in the Lomas de la Presa neighborhood was flagged by Mexico’s Federal Consumer Agency (Profeco) for charging $969.40 pesos for a set of 24 essential items.

Iván Escalante Ruiz, head of Profeco, presented the latest report during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference. Covering the period from June 30 to July 4, 2025, the report highlighted that the lowest-priced basic basket was found at Chedraui Poliforum in León, Guanajuato, where it cost $736.70 pesos. In stark contrast, Bodega Aurrerá in Lomas de la Presa, Tijuana, received a “black mark” for being the priciest nationwide.

It’s worth noting that just the previous week, Walmart Hipódromo in Tijuana held the same unwelcome distinction, with a basic basket priced at $982.60 pesos between June 23 and 27 (more than $70 pesos above Profeco’s target price of $910 pesos).

Based on the latest figures, the basic basket at Bodega Aurrerá Lomas de la Presa is $59.40 pesos higher than Profeco’s benchmark.

Profeco’s Ranks Tijuana as One of the Most Expensive Cities for Basic Food Baskets

Profeco carries out weekly price monitoring of products and services, comparing costs against inflation and general cost-of-living trends.

The “Who’s Who in Prices” report is part of an internal effort to publicly highlight stores with “black marks” for high prices and “checkmarks” for low ones. However, no financial penalties are imposed; the program aims to keep consumers informed and encourage fair competition among retailers.

This marks the third time in two months that Tijuana has been ranked as the city with the country’s highest-priced basic food basket. On two of those occasions, the Walmart Hipódromo supermarket (located in Plaza Galerías) was cited, while the most recent case involves Bodega Aurrerá.
