Tijuana’s Department of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPCM) continues to enforce its zero-tolerance policy against drunk driving, a measure designed to prevent fatal accidents.

As of August 12 this year, authorities have recorded 284 traffic violations involving drivers who had consumed alcohol — 205 for alcohol detected on the breath and 79 for being partially intoxicated. July registered the highest number of infractions, with 47 cases.

In high-traffic areas monitored through DUI checkpoints, 9,556 vehicles have been towed. Of these, 5,993 had open alcohol containers inside, while 3,563 drivers were found to be partially intoxicated.

To prevent further traffic incidents related to drunk driving, preventive measures have been strengthened. SSPCM has also issued recommendations to avoid driving under the influence, such as designating a sober driver.

If drinking alcohol, it’s best to use ride-hailing apps, taxis, or public transportation. Additionally, avoid mixing alcohol with medications or substances that impair reflexes, and plan a safe way home before drinking.

Consequences of drunk driving may include fines, vehicle impoundment, administrative arrest in severe cases, and the risk of causing serious injury or death to oneself or others.

SSPCM urges civic responsibility and awareness: if you drink, don’t drive. Prevention is in your hands.
