TIJUANA Theres good news for local baseball fans.
The group that owned the Algodoneros of Guasave, in Sinaloa, had requested that the Pacific League approve the transfer of their franchise to Tijuana. On Friday, the team presidents did just that, according to the leagues website.
The president of the Algodoneros, Jaime Castro Parra, was quoted as saying that although Guasave had loyal fans, the partners no longer wanted to invest in the club. He said attendance had dropped significantly, which had resulted in economic losses.
The Pacific League plays in the fall and winter. The team is to play in Tijuana for the 2012-2013 season. The move means that Baja California will have two Pacific League teams, the Algodoneros and the Águilas de Mexicali.
Tijuana last had a professional baseball team in 2005 to 2008, when the Potros played in the city as part of the Mexican Baseball League. An ownership dispute led to the team being transferred to Reynosa, Tamaulipas at the end of the 2008 season.
