Great news for taco lovers in San Diego! The famous Tijuana-based taquería “Tacos El Franc” is officially crossing the border and bringing its authentic flavors to Southern California. Its first U.S. location will open at Westfield Plaza Bonita, located at 3030 Plaza Bonita Road, Space 1108, in National City. While an official opening date has not yet been announced, expectations are already high.
Tacos El Franc gained popularity after being recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide Mexico. It has also been praised by the website TasteAtlas and even been featured in Netflix’s acclaimed series “Taco Chronicles.”
From its delicious grilled meat to its irresistible adobada, cabeza, suadero, and tongue tacos, Tacos El Franc offers a variety of flavors, including tasty vegetarian options.

The new National City branch aims to replicate the Tijuana experience with a full culinary offering. It will feature counter seating, traditional tables, and a cheve-bar serving Mexican beer, micheladas, and clamatos.
“There’s a part of Mexico that hasn’t yet been shared with the U.S.,” said Roberto Kelly, co-owner of Tacos El Franc USA. “The true flavor and quality of authentic Tijuana tacos haven’t really been experienced here. We’re ready to change that, and it’s a big responsibility to do it right.”

The story of Tacos El Franc dates back to 1974, when its founder, Javier Valadez, started it as a humble street cart. Over time, thanks to its unmatched flavor, the business took a major step by opening its first establishment in Tijuana in 1996.
The experience at its new National City location promises to be authentic, offering customers the chance to enjoy the true taste of Mexican food—as certified by the culinary website TasteAtlas, which named Tacos El Franc the place with the best al pastor tacos in the world. This prestigious title was awarded after evaluations by over 20 expert culinary critics.
The opening of this new branch in San Diego will bring the delicious flavors of Tijuana’s cuisine across the border.
