Esperanto Park has been awarded the prestigious “New Park Project Award for the Latin America Region” by the World Urban Parks organization.
The award honors the park’s remarkable transformation from a neglected wasteland into a model of urban renewal, now serving as the largest recreational, sports, and cultural space in Baja California.
Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda celebrated the achievement, stating the park symbolizes a powerful urban revival.

“Where there was once neglect and garbage, there is now life. Where waste once accumulated, families now gather, laughter is heard, and we can breathe a sense of pride. That is the true essence of Esperanto Park,” she said.
The “New Park Project Award” recognizes initiatives with significant global impact in reclaiming public spaces. The award will be formally presented at the World Urban Parks 2025 Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey, which will take place from October 8-10.

According to World Urban Parks Council President Tim Geyer, the award followed a rigorous international evaluation of over 100 nominated projects. The winning entry was selected based on its innovation, positive community impact, and environmental contributions.
The scale of Esperanto Park’s green infrastructure is a key part of its success. The park now boasts more than 2,000 trees, 15,000 shrubs, and 20,000 square meters of natural grass, making it the largest space in the state for recreation, sports, and culture.

With over one million visitors in 2025 alone, the park has become a beloved destination for Tijuana residents. The project now positions Baja California as a leading example in sustainable urban development and the creation of quality public spaces.
