The Tijuana government has launched a historic expansion of its garbage collection system, bringing regular service to tens of thousands of homes for the first time. The initiative, a cornerstone of Mayor Ismael Burgueño’s administration, was highlighted in his recent First Year Progress Report as a major step toward a cleaner and more orderly city.
The effort began in February 16 with the unanimous approval by the City Council of a new strategy to lease 129 garbage trucks. This investment dramatically boosted the city’s operational capacity, setting the stage for an unprecedented overhaul of the sanitation service.
The plan culminated on September 10, when the mayor officially deployed the new fleet, activating 327 brand new collection routes. The expansion now provides regular trash pickup to 84,824 households that previously had no service.

- The Abelardo L. Rodríguez Dam area: 32 new routes in 6 neighborhoods, benefiting 8,531 households.
- Playas de Tijuana: 35 new routes in 7 neighborhoods, benefiting 8,631 households.
- San Antonio de los Buenos: 36 new routes in 16 neighborhoods, benefiting 8,202 households.
- Sánchez Taboada: 43 new routes in 21 neighborhoods, benefiting 9,902 households.
- La Presa Este: 181 new routes in 58 neighborhoods, benefiting 49,558 households.

The project not only expands coverage but also optimizes resources by redefining existing routes for greater efficiency. Mayor Burgueño emphasized that this effort aligns with broader goals of improving public health, urban order, and environmental sustainability for all Tijuana residents.
“We are working with actions to transform Tijuana. The expansion of collection routes is historic and represents a real change in the quality of life for thousands of families, who now have a dignified and efficient service,” stated the official.
