U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to pay $5,000 to every adult citizen in the United States.
Trump named the proposed direct payment the “Trump Dividend.” However, he made the payout contingent on the Republican Party keeping control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.
According to Trump, the program would be funded by revenues generated from tariffs on foreign imports. Yet analysts and lawmakers warned that the initiative could carry a price tag of over $1.2 trillion.
Critics and policy experts also point out that the proposal lacks a clear funding mechanism and would face a steep uphill battle for congressional approval.
This isn’t Trump’s first time pitching a direct payout to voters. Just weeks earlier, he floated a smaller, one-time payment of $90 specifically targeted at senior citizens.
