Mexico became a focal point of Donald Trump’s remarks at the United Nations on Monday, as the U.S. president used his address to criticize the country’s handling of cartel activity and demand stronger control over its territory.
Trump characterized Mexico as the “epicenter” of cartel violence, tying his comments to the country’s shared border with the United States. He described the situation as unacceptable and said the presence of cartels represented a threat along the roughly 2,000-mile border between the two countries.
A Direct Message to Sheinbaum’s Government
Trump directed his demand toward the government of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, calling on Mexico to regain control of areas he said were in the hands of cartel organizations.
“Mexico must recover control of its territory from the enemies of humanity,” Trump said during the address.
His comments brought the issue of Mexico’s security and cartel presence directly into his speech before the UN General Assembly, with the U.S. president framing the situation as a matter affecting the two countries’ shared border.
