The Treasury Department announced that President Donald Trump’s signature will be featured on upcoming one-dollar bills, marking the first time a sitting president has been included on U.S. currency.

The change is being made in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary and is also intended to recognize the Republican president’s “economic achievements,” according to authorities.

The new bills are set to enter circulation on July 4. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s signature will also appear on the note.

The move follows a separate decision last Thursday, when a federal arts committee unanimously approved the design of a coin bearing President Trump’s image, also in commemoration of the country’s independence.

The special design depicts the president with his fists resting on a desk and is based on a 2025 photograph taken by his team. That image is currently on display at the National Gallery as part of the “Portraits of Washington” exhibit.

With the committee’s unanimous approval and no objections raised, the U.S. Mint has been cleared to begin production, though the coin’s size and denomination remain under discussion.

The decisions have drawn criticism from Democratic officials, who point to federal law prohibiting a sitting president from appearing on U.S. currency.
