SAN YSIDRO – The U-turn lane located at the extreme left-hand side of Interstate 5 near the entrance to Mexico will be closed for the next two years as part of the remodeling project at the port of entry.

Mexico’s federal transportation department announced the closure, which it said took effect on Friday.

U.S. border authorities were not available for comments.

Motorists who do not want to cross into Mexico will find an alternate U-turn lane, also on the left-hand side, about 24 yards before the U.S. Customs and Border Protection booth, according to the announcement.

The remodeling and expansion project, the largest ever on the U.S. border, began in February.

If it proceeds as planned, the number of north-bound inspection booths will increase from 24 to 62 by the time the project is finished in 2016.
