This month, the University of California San Diego (UCSD) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California "to increase collaboration and exchange among students and faculty from both universities." This according to an official news release from UCSD.

The initiative will include exchanges of faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars, publications, materials, and information. It will also facilitate and promote collaboration on research projects and publications, and special short-term programs and visits.

The five year partnership has the goal of having 100,000 Mexican students studying in U.S. colleges and universities by 2018; and 50,000 U.S. students studying in Mexico. This partnership is building upon ongoing collaborations between higher education institutes on both sides of the border, but the goal of this memorandum of understanding is to strengthen these collaborations further, and work toward tackling issues that concern both countries.

UC San Diego also has a similar formal partnership with Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF), a prestigious Mexican think tank that conducts extensive social science research.

UCSD has one of the largest residential fellowship programs for research on Mexico in the U.S., known as the Fellows Program.
