Hugo Ayón, a videographer based in Ensenada, along with his sons Esteban and Sebastián, were involved in an accident on Saturday while covering the Baja 500 race. The three were working at the time of the incident and sustained various injuries. According to a GoFundMe campaign organized to help cover medical expenses, Hugo and Sebastián are the most seriously injured and will require major surgery.
In a statement shared on social media, Sebastián Ayón explained that the family’s vehicle was struck head-on by a prerunner belonging to Sam Baldi’s team. He said the impact caused him to hit the front seat where his brother was sitting, and the force of the seat pushing against his leg resulted in a slight displacement of his hip. He is currently awaiting surgery to have pins inserted.
In one post circulating on social media, people close to the family wrote:
“These young men are the hardworking individuals behind the cameras who bring Baja racing to fans around the world. Long hours, sleepless nights, endless miles in the desert. They have always been there for this community. Now it is our turn to be there for them.”
