Enrique Beltranena Mejicano, CEO of Volaris, has outlined a three-part strategy to address the frequent flight disruptions caused by fog banks at Tijuana International Airport. The proposal comes as the airport continues to face operational challenges due to weather conditions, impacting thousands of daily passengers.

During a recent conference with COPARMEX, the business leader spoke about specific measures that could minimize future disruptions in three key areas: advanced prediction technology, passenger and cargo protection protocols, and long-term airport infrastructure modifications.

The most significant proposal involves extending the airport’s runway to allow for Category 2 and Category 3 instrument landing systems toward the ocean, which would allow for mechanized landings from the planes to the airport.

Beltranena emphasized that the current infrastructure makes it impossible to reaccommodate more than 29,000 passengers per day during mass cancellations.

The airline carries nearly 25,000 passengers daily on its Baja California routes. Since their launch, Tijuana and Mexicali together have handled 92 million travelers — 82 million through Tijuana and 10 million through Mexicali. Altogether, 32% of the airline’s domestic routes are concentrated in the state, with 25% based in Tijuana and 7% in Mexicali.
