TIJUANA Hundreds of volunteers turned out Saturday to paint over graffiti on buildings and fences along one of the city's most transited boulevards, the municipal government announced.
They were participating in "Tijuana Blanca," a program organized by the city to clean up neighborhoods in the crowded La Mesa district.
The volunteers, supported by municipal workers, began their work around 9 a.m. where Federico Benítez and Díaz Ordaz boulevards converge and worked their way to the Mexico Lindo neighborhood.
They painted white the walls, fences and facades of buildings that had been tagged by graffiti and removed trash and other debris along the avenues and boulevards.
The program calls for the volunteers clean up neighborhoods located next to the heavily used Díaz Ordaz Boulevard.
"Graffiti is one of the greatest social problems that we have to attack in this area, that's why we're launching this program there," said David Saúl Guakil, who heads the city's social development department.
