TIJUANA - A dozen individuals and a soccer team were honored Wednesday in "The Walk of Fame" for fostering a positive image of the border region.
The goal of the annual award is to highlight the creativity, effort and discipline of a variety of professionals who are good ambassadors for Tijuana.
They were honored at a noontime ceremony in courtyard of Tijuana's City Hall. Those honored this year:
Raúl Plasencia Villanueva, the president of the National Commission of Human Rights;
Miguel Ángel Cárdenas, founder and president of San Diego Global Knowledge University, a private institution that prepares individuals to be globally competitive;
Javier Plascencia, internationally renowned chef, owner of La Mision 19 in Tijuana and Romesco's in Bonita;
Dr. Rodrigo Rodríguez, expert in regenerative medicine and co-founder of the International Bio Care Hospital in Tijuana;
Eduardo Barrios, director of the Baja California Orchestra;
José L. Betancourt, retired Navy vice admiral, who once served as San Diego's "Navy mayor";
Raúl Cárdenas, architect and director of the artists' collective Torolab;
Sandra Equihua, Hollywood animation designer, and her husband, Jorge Gutiérrez, animation master, founders of Mexopolis Animation Studio in Burbank;
Enrique Jiménez (known as "Ejival"), a music producer and founder of electronic music label Static Discos;
Carlos Besne-Irigoyen, Pan American Games karate champion;
Club Xolotzcuintles de Tijuana, the city's First Division soccer team.
The Walk of Fame was created in 2001 by the Tijuana Image Committee and supported by the municipal and state governments. Since then, some 125 individuals and institutions have been honored
