TIJUANA.- College students will tackle problems in crime, education, jobs and arts and culture unique to the border region in a high-profile workshop being held later this month, one of a series along the U.S.-Mexico divide.

The students will analyze problems in round-table discussions and develop solutions that can be put into practice for at least a year to benefit their home communities.

The event, called "Jornada Frontera Tijuana 2012: Vivir al Borde" (Living on the Edge), will be held Jan. 18 to 20 at the Grand Hotel Tijuana. College students from both sides of the border are invited to apply by Jan. 12. Community leaders and urban artists are also encouraged to apply.

Organizers will pay transportation, lodging and meals for the 200 people who are selected to participate.

From those, a select number will be invited to attend a young people's summit in May called "Vanguardia Latina" in Washington, D.C., to speak about their projects.

The workshop will open Jan. 18 with a free celebration called "Tijuana: Con Sabor a Espacio," a one-day, local version of a conference for communication students sponsored annually by Televisa in Mexico City. The festivities, also at the Grand Hotel Tijuana, will feature local television anchor Marco Antonio Regil as well as entertainers from Telehit and Televisa, and a concert by Nortec, Bostich + Fussible.

"Espacio" is free but those interested in attending must fill out an application.
