UNITED STATES. – It´s probable that more than once our alarm doesn't go off and we are rushing out the door because we are running late for school or work. Our appearance is different from when we wake up in comparison to when we get ready to do our daily activities. We always want to show the best side of us, although, that sometimes isn't possible.

Inspired by this latter idea, photographer Mel Keiser decided to shoot a series titled Becoming Mel, where she portrays a sequence of self portraits that help compare her just-rolled-out-of-bed appearance to her dolled up and ready to go face.

In this series we can see her with puffy eyes, unruly hair, imperfections, little makeup and a need for five more minutes of sleep.

¨Through several manipulations of my own image, I´m trying to find what is essential. The invariable structure of what Mel is. Perceiving one´s self objectively is generally understood as something impossible: We are dichotomous beings within a constant change, only aware of a fraction of our cognitive activities¨ said Mel Keiser about her project.
