With the holiday season set to begin, authorities in Tijuana are urging residents to avoid drinking and driving, warning that alcohol-related crashes remain one of the city’s most serious public safety risks during this time of year.
Authorities warn against drinking and driving during the holidays
During a press conference held Monday, December 22, municipal officials addressed holiday road safety measures, including sobriety checkpoints and enforcement protocols aimed at reducing alcohol-impaired driving.
José Alejandro Ávila Amezcua, head of the city’s Public Security and Civil Protection Department, called on residents to make responsible choices and avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking.
“Please do not drink if you are going to drive,” Ávila Amezcua said. “If you test positive at a sobriety checkpoint, you will be taken off the road for your safety and for the safety of others.”
Officials said drivers who fail a breathalyzer test may be detained for up to 36 hours at the Municipal Infractors Holding Facility, where they remain until their blood alcohol level decreases. The measure is intended to prevent impaired drivers from posing a risk to themselves or others.

In addition to detention, drunk driving can result in fines and administrative penalties. Authorities noted that each case goes through a review process involving city auditors, traffic experts, and a judge, who ultimately determines the appropriate sanction.
According to officials, fines for driving under the influence can exceed 21,000 pesos (about $1,200), including vehicle towing fees.
