In it's first ever participation in Copa Libertadores Club Tijuana already aspires to be a semifinalist, but first must overcome the Atletico Mineiro team in the quarterfinals. History of Mexican teams in the Copa Libertadores in general has been good, but statistics also plays a part in these matches.

In the 14 occasions that Mexican teams have reached the semifinals, 6 have won in that instance, so the background is ideal for Xolos to make the statistics grow in favor of Mexican football.

Successful teams in the quarterfinals stage of Copa Libertadores have been Cruz Azul, America, and Chivas of Guadalajara. In 2001 Cruz Azul made it all the way to the final. America defeated fellow Mexicans Morelia in 2002 to advance to semifinals. Chivas handed Boca Juniors a huge loss in 2006 in the quarterfinals. One year later Chivas once again advanced to semifinals by beating Velez. America returned to quarterfinal glory in 2008 by beating Santos of Brazil. Once again Chivas of Guadalajara in 2010, this time making it all the way to the final.

How ever it's been three years since a Mexican team last won a quarterfinal match up. The last time a Mexican team was there was in 2011 when Jaguares of Chiapas lost to Junior of Barranquilla (Colombia).

Xolos is now Mexican soccer's hope to once again reach the deceive stage of the Copa Libertadores; in spite of the fact that in recent years Mexican clubs have felt inconvenience with international competitions.
