So you want to know more about what choices there are for eating out in this area? Well, more than you might imagine. There is a culinary school in the nearby town of Ensenada which turns out plenty of great cooks and chefs. In fact, in Ensenada it can be difficult to find what you might think of as a Mexican restaurant for this reason. Seafood is abundant and fresh in our area, as are fresh produce and meats of all kinds. Ensenada is only about twenty five miles south of Rosarito.
Along the waterfront in Ensenada there are plenty of small restaurants serving up seafood soup and fish tacos. The fish taco is a creation of Baja and should be sampled if you like fish. The average cost of a fish or meat taco is a dollar. This is considered the fast food of the area and is quite tasty and easy to find. Fish tacos come wrapped in one or two small tortillas made of corn. They are fried in a very hot oil to seal in the juice of the fish without being greasy. Top them with shredded cabbage, salsa if desired, and a squeeze of lime juice.
The meat tacos are made mostly from carne asada which is a very thinly sliced beef cooked quickly over hot coals, or in the very hot oil. Try both, if you can, so you see which one you prefer. Radishes fresh picked are cleaned and ready to accompany your tacos, and grilled scallions are quite common.
One of the most popular restaurants in the area is in south Rosarito.
At Splash, waves crash over the black volcanic rock and provide a spectacular backdrop to the freshest of seafood purchased daily. Nicolas Santos, the owner, serves up margaritas and cold beer with an attitude that you are now his friend if you are in his establishment. A fish burrito big enough to make a meal with a mug of dark Mexican beer will only set you back around $5. Music nightly for dancing.
