Ship To Be Sunk Off of Coast of Rosarito, B.C.

Part of a planned marine water park

ROSARITO.- The artificial reef that is planned for Rosarito Beach, Baja California has been an idea in the making for many years which was once again taken up at the start of this year. The first step, sinking an old ship, will take place in November with the goal of this becoming the home for marine plant and wildlife, as well as an attraction for divers.

This project, which will be inaugurated with the sinking of the Uribe P121 next month, is the first aquatic park in Baja California, and is being done in conjunction with "Rosarito Ocean Sports" and the Municipal Government of Rosarito to essentially kill two birds with one stone: protect marine wildlife and stimulate local economic activities in the tourism sector.

According to information from Rosarito Ocean Sports, the official sponsor and first guide operator for the official reef, the ship will be sunk 94 feet under water more than 2.5 kilometers away from shore. It is worth noting that this will be the first of many objects that are intended to be sunken in order to expand the water park.

For more information on how to take part in this experience, visit their website Rosarito Ocean Sports and check out their calendar of events for November.
