Baja California is set to make sports history as it hosts the region’s first binational FootGolf tournament at the Bajamar Ocean Front Golf Resort in Ensenada.

Designed to strengthen athletic ties between communities in California and Baja California, the landmark tournament introduces a three-round, six-hole course integrated into Bajamar’s grounds.

FootGolf combines the strategic precision of golf with the mechanics of soccer. Competitors use a standard regulation size 5 soccer ball, aiming to complete the course in as few kicks as possible into 53-centimeter (21-inch) cups.

Lorenzo Ruiz, representative for the Mexican FootGolf Federation in Baja California, acknowledged that introducing a hybrid sport initially raised eyebrows among traditionalists.

“As much of a challenge as it has been, the novelty of blending two major sports is actually our biggest asset in building an audience,” Ruiz said.

FootGolf has gained significant traction across central and southern Mexico in places such as Monterrey, Guadalajara, Morelos, Acapulco, and Cancún and is now expanding to the north.
