The State Commission of Public Services of Tijuana (CESPT) is calling on all users to periodically inspect their water meters and verify that the surrounding area remains unobstructed and easily accessible. Maintaining the meter in good condition, officials note, allows households to track their water usage more effectively, spot potential leaks promptly, and facilitate readings.
Mónica Vega Aguirre, the agency’s General Director, emphasized that the meter is a precision instrument designed to register the volume of water consumed per household. Proper care, she explained, ensures reliable consumption data and helps identify any unusual changes.
Among the CESPT’s primary recommendations, residents are advised to keep the meter box clear of any obstructions including plant pots, furniture, vehicles, building materials, or debris.
It is equally important to maintain the area clean, check that the cover is secure, and prevent unauthorized individuals from handling the equipment.
Users are also encouraged to regularly inspect the meter for signs of moisture or water run-off near the installation, as these could be early indicators of a leak. Should any irregularities be observed, CESPT urges prompt reporting to avoid service disruptions.
As a best practice, the commission recommends recording the meter reading at least once a week and cross-referencing it with the consumption shown on the monthly bill. Maintaining a personal log over time makes it easier to spot abnormal usage patterns and detect internal leaks.
CESPT also operates a dedicated Meter Laboratory, where newly acquired equipment undergoes rigorous testing to ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards and official regulations. The facility is also available to conduct performance verifications upon request, should a user have concerns about their meter’s accuracy.
The agency also stressed that proper meter care benefits families, enabling more precise billing, early leak intervention, and a smoother delivery of water services overall.
