Víctor Lagunas Peñaloza confirmed Tuesday that Aarón Gustavo Pizarro, who had been sentenced to 94 years in prison for the double homicide of his brother, Víctor Lagunas Cabrera, and Miguel Villegas, was set free after a successful appeal.

The announcement came directly from Lagunas Peñaloza during a live broadcast on his social media channels, in which he revealed that his family received a WhatsApp notification around 2:00 p.m. informing them that the appellate court had ruled in favor of the convicted man.

According to Lagunas Peñaloza, the ruling was handed down by magistrates Gustavo Medina Contreras, Odette Tapia Palma, and María Elizabeth Castro Rodríguez, all members of the Superior Court of Justice of the State of Baja California. The three judges assumed their posts following last year’s judicial elections for magistrates.

In the livestream, during which he was accompanied by his father Víctor Lagunas, Lagunas Peñaloza did not hide his alarm over the decision’s potential repercussions.

“If anything happens to my family, to third parties, or to myself, it will be the fault of those three magistrates,” he stated.

He further vowed that neither he nor his relatives would remain silent, insisting they would continue to speak out against the release of the man once convicted in the August 2020 double slaying in Tijuana.
