Four members of the Mexican Society for the Responsible and Tolerable Auto Consumption (SMART, in Spanish), submitted and won a legal protection from the Mexican Supreme Justice Court against the prohibition to grow and consume their own marijuana.
These are the beneficiaries of the Court's decision this past Wednesday, who are now free to consume and cultivate marijuana for its recreational use.

Ricaño celebrated the Supreme Court's decision. With 63 years of age, she's the first and only woman who can consume marijuana in Mexico. Founder and president of "México Unido contra la Delincuencia", considers this as a milestone on the front to defend human rights.
"The prohibition of cannabis use has only brought destruction, death, violence and injustice, you only have to see how a young person with a small quantity of marijuana ends up in jail and gets corrupted. (...) I just want to make something clear, we aren't promoters of marijuana, I'm not going to grow it, or consume it, we don't want kids to use drugs, but an adult must be able to decide and have their right to choose respected", she said to Universal newspaper.

He is the director of Grupo Pochteca, a chemical industry that's listed on the stock exchange; he has dedicated his free time on promoting the organization that Ricaño leads, which advocates the legalization of marijuana. The family man says that he is not your usual consumer but he doesn't deny using it in the past. The submitted legal protection never had the purpose of changing their way of life.
"The idea is to create a precedent for what follows, set the path so that thousands of people can do the same and make the Legislative branch address the subject and drug policy in a rational way."

As a lawyer, the drafting of a legal strategy that would triumph in the Court was a difficult task, after being denied back in 2013 by the Federal Committee for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Comisión Federal contra Riesgos Sanitarios in Spanish). Torres Landa's stance is the same as his fellow colleagues who form part of the MCD foundation, where he also holds the General Secretary position.
"Our proposal isn't to have the drug be sold like candy in the supermarket, what we are suggesting is to inform the risks and have the citizen decide for him or herself, through education, prevention campaigns and timely information for the average citizen."

The United Mexico against Crime foundation's treasurer says he doesn't wish to start using cannabis; he is the current owner of the Rafael Dondé foundation. The accountant stated that his goal is to reaffirm the liberal State and start a debate about current drug policy on the public health front and not see it as a crime.
"We are feeling really positive about having the four judges support the right of the people and their self-determination and freedom to decide on consuming it or not, this is just the beginning, now it's up to Congress to actually get into it and create a bill that regulates consumption properly"
