MEXICO -Mexicans living abroad will soon start receiving their official special ID cards for voting in federal elections back home, after a year long process begins to bear fruit.
[p]Since the program was announced, some 8, 180 applications for the special voting ID's for Mexican elections have been received so far.
The head of Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) announced today that the issuing of these special ID's has begun.
These ID's won't just let Mexicans living abroad vote in the 2018 presidential elections, but will also provide other benefits like using it to apply for a driver's license, open a bank account, among other services available in the countries they live in.
Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas are receiving at least 100 ID applications every day. For this first phase, applications are being accepted for only Mexicans living inside the U.S., however, in June and August the program will extend to 15 cities all around the world.
