The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, finally recognized the victory of Democratic leader Joe Biden in the U.S. presidential elections.
After the decision of the Electoral College of the neighboring country was announced, AMLO said during his morning conference that he had sent a letter to his counterpart, congratulating him on his victory, after the ratification by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard.
The letter says:
Dear Mr. Biden: I am writing this text to congratulate you on the victory granted by the people and endorsed by the electoral authorities of the United States of America.
As you will remember, we met a few years ago and since then I have expressed to you, personally and in a letter, the ideal of transforming Mexico and the purpose of banishing political corruption, the main cause of the painful inequality and violence we suffer.
Our countries are linked by their neighbors and our peoples are united by history, economy and culture. For this reason, we rulers must strive to maintain good bilateral relations based on collaboration, friendship and respect for our sovereignty.
We are certain that with you in the presidency of the United States it will be possible to continue applying the basic principles of foreign policy established in our Constitution; in particular, that of non-intervention and self-determination of the people.
I also express my recognition of your position in favor of the immigrants of Mexico and the world, which will allow us to continue with the plan to promote the development and well-being of the communities of southeast Mexico and the countries of Central America. I believe that in this way no one will be forced to abandon their places of origin and will be able to live, work and be happy with their families among their people and with their culture, and in this way we will be able to build the definitive solution to the migratory flows from and through Mexico to the United States.
I hope that soon Mr. Biden will have the opportunity to talk about this and other issues, while I reiterate our congratulations and wish you the best of luck for the good of your people and our relations.
