The general director of the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (CNPPCE), Ruy López Ridaura announced that INDRE (Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference) is investigating the discovery of a possible new strain of COVID-19 found in Jalisco.

It was revealed at a conference held at the National Palace, where it was reported that the state laboratory is carrying out an exhaustive analysis to determine the precise characteristics that this new variant could present, such as its facility of infection or the mortality rate.

López Ridaura emphasized that "surely" there are many strains that are not as mentioned as those already discovered in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil or others that have not yet been announced, but even so it is not a Mexican variant per se, at least not according to the research, however Mexico has the responsibility to determine the epidemiological importance of this mutation.

Even though this mutation has already been studied for some time, the director indicated that this is a process that could take a long time, since it is necessary to evaluate in detail each component of the strain, as well as its possible effects in different cases of people infected by the SARS Cov-2 virus.

This comes to light due to the fact that a couple of days ago, Jalisco had announced the possible detection of two pairs of cases that could be of the British and Brazilian strain in its territory, which ended up being discarded when the corresponding studies of the analyzed samples were carried out.

Nataly Vega Magaña, head of the Diagnostic Laboratory of Emerging and Reemerging Diseases (LaDEER), was responsible for informing that one of the patients where this variation was detected assured to have had contact with a person of foreign origin in the town of Puerto Vallarta, therefore, health experts suspect that it was in that city where this variant started.
