Tijuana Mayor Karla Ruiz Macfarland backs Garita Otay II project

"We endorse the agreement for the Otay II-Otay Mesa East Garita project..." posted the mayor

This Monday, June 28th, the signing of the agreement that consolidates the plan of the United States and Mexico to create a new border crossing at Otay Mesa (Otay II) was celebrated. This will be a new option to cross to San Diego that aims to reduce waiting times by 50%.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Tijuana, Karla Ruiz Macfarland, who was praised for her work by the Mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria. Gloria acknowledged that being mayor of cities as important as San Diego and Tijuana is no easy task, especially in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.

For her part, the mayor did not make a statement on the occasion, however, she made a publication on her Facebook account where she shared that the government of Tijuana supports the Garita Otay II-Otay Mesa East border agreement that "will optimize mobility and boost the binational economy".

We support the agreement for the Garita Otay II-Otay Mesa East project, a new cross-border bridge that will improve the safety and security of those who visit us, reduce waiting times during rush hour, optimize mobility and boost the binational economy.

This is not the only act of support for this binational zone on the part of the mayor, since her administration has given importance to tourism, which as a border zone is essential for commerce. In fact, this has been reflected in the IGAE Global Indicator of Economic Activity by INEGI, which reported a 3.1 increase in commerce sector activities. This was only in the month of March.

Likewise, efforts have been made to provide equipment to Tijuana's Tourist Police, since they are in charge of providing assistance to international visitors, mostly from the United States.
