State of alert ends in Tijuana but risks remain

It is recommended that the public be aware of the possible collapse of walls

TIJUANA – The Civil Protection agency on Thursday afternoon ended the citywide alert prompted by the heavy rains after normal weather conditions returned.

The last report of damage caused by rainfall was the landslide in Cumbres del Rubí and Anexa

Ramírez, south of the city, where seven homes were affected and the families that lived there were evacuated.

Antonio Alfaro, Civil Protection’s deputy director, said that in that same area they have identified a dozen homes in serious condition and that families living there have already been notified of the risk, but have not yet evacuated and the agency is continuing to monitor the situation.

For its part, the family protection agency, known DIF, reported that the 71 people who sought refuge in a shelter in a sports complex in La Mesa have returned to their homes or with family and friends.

The forecast calls for rainy weather to return Saturday night and continue until Monday, but it is expected to be light.

However, Civil Protection recommends that the public be aware of the possible collapse of walls and fences because of the saturated ground.
