”Who’s who in basic basket prices” has become a weekly segment in AMLO’s morning press conference where the head of the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Ricardo Padilla Sheffield reveals the prices of the 21 products that are part of the basic basket. The basic basket is enough to feed a family of 4 people for a week and, during this period of time, Soriana was the most expensive supermarket in the entire country.

Sheffield revealed that Soriana approached PROFECO last week to announce that there would be some changes in their product pricing policies.

“I think that what they were actually announcing is that they were going to take advantage of consumers, because Soriana is now off the charts in the entire country,” the head of PROFECO stated.

In the central part of the country, the most expensive supermarket was Soriana of Coyoacán with a price of $1,016.30 pesos. In the northern part (which includes Baja California Sur, Aguascalientes, Durango, Jalisco, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas), Soriana Tangamanga of San Luis Potosí was the most expensive option with a price of $1,018.45 pesos. The other northern part (which includes Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora, and Tamaulipas), Soriana Híper of Hermosillo was the most expensive place with a price of $1,007.65 pesos. Lastly, in the southern part of Mexico, Soriana Oaxaca was the most expensive supermarket in regards to the basic basket with a price of $1,010.40 pesos.

According to El Financiero, these are the 21 products that belong to the basic basket: corn tortillas, beans, rice grains, fresh whole chicken, beefsteak, pork chops, serrano pepper, onions, tomatoes, apples, limes, melons, bread, potatoes, carrots, brown sugar, soup pasta, toilet paper, and soap. According to the head of PROFECO, every city has several different options to buy these products at cheaper prices.
