Baja California suspends classes at all school levels due to Hurricane Kay: Marina del Pilar

The state government has taken this decision in order to protect Baja Californian families

Due to the course taken by Hurricane Kay, authorities have decided to suspend classes at all school levels in the state on Friday, September 9, in order to not risk the lives of Baja Californian students. Governor Marina del Pilar has stated that the Early Warning System for Tropical Cyclones has issued an orange alert in Baja California, which is why this decision was taken.

For his part, the head of the Secretariat of the Interior (SGG), Catalino Zavala Márquez explained that an orange alert means that actions should be taken to protect the population against the risks that Hurricane Kay could cause in Baja Californian territory.

The alert also states that Municipal and State Councils of Civil Protection must be set up and operate permanently. This occurred last Wednesday, September 8 after Governor Marina del Pilar instructed it, Zavala Márquez explained.

The Secretary of SGG stated that on the early morning of Thursday, Hurricane Kay dropped down to Category I, and it is expected that when it reaches Baja California it drops even lower and becomes a tropical storm. Its trajectory should make it stay around the edges of the Pacific coastline, according to the forecast by the National Water Commission (CONAGUA).

Through preventive actions, the secretary stated that there are already 80 shelters for people who require shelter from rain, winds, or floods, which will be located at all municipalities.

National Meteorological Services (SMN) stated that the rains will be concentrated in southern Baja California on Thursday afternoon, mainly in San Quintin, San Felipe, and Ensenada. In the rest of the state, lighter rain is expected for Friday.

Zavala called on people to stay at home. In case they live in an area with flooding precedents or risks, they should stay with a family relative or request support to move to a temporary shelter, and under no circumstance, should one try to cross an area or street that has been flooded or currently has currents.

He added that the three levels of government have maintained a coordination council in San Quintin to intensify preventive measures which resulted in checking up on shelters from El Rosario all the way to Bahía de los Ángeles.

Lastly, the official stated that the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR) carried out the preventive closure to all types of boats at the Isla de Cedros port, as well as the closure to boats carrying less than 500 tons of cargo at the Ensenada port, which could later be closed to even larger vessels.
