Magnitude adjusted to 7.7 with 217 aftershocks for earthquake in Michoacan

The earthquake’s aftershocks occurred in different parts of the country: a person lost their life and several material damages were reported

National Seismological Services has adjusted the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred today, whose epicenter was near Coalcomán, in the state of Michoacan.

The magnitude of the earthquake was adjusted to 7.7 and has caused 217 aftershocks in several places in Mexico. The strongest magnitude among these recorded was 5.3.

The earthquakes of 1985, that had a magnitude of 8.1 and 7.6, as well as the most recent ones that occurred this century on September 19 and 20, have caused great impact and considerable damages, especially in central Mexico.

During the earthquake that took place in Colima, a person lost their life after a wall of a Coppel store collapsed and crushed him. This is so far the only recorded loss of human life.

At a press conference that took place in National Seismological Services facilities, specialists recommended people to be on the lookout for new information. They also warned about the possibility of small “shocks” in the following days which will be of lower magnitude. In addition, through a newsletter, it was revealed by the Ocean Network of SINAT that high tsunami heights were recorded in the coastlines of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, and Guerrero, which is why people are being recommended to stay away from the coasts and not get on boats.

Authorities are currently carrying out tours to verify the amount of damage caused by the earthquake and to help out all victims.
