AMLO is looking to grant clemency to Roxana Ruiz, young woman who killed her rapist

The president criticized the judge’s decision, who sentenced the young woman to 6 years in prison for “defense abuse” after killing her sexual assailant

After young woman Roxana Ruiz was sentenced to 6 years in prison for killing her sexual abuser, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, stated in his morning press conference that he will try to help her with a pardon.

We are going to try to help this young woman (...) if it proceeds, I mean if clemency is able to be granted, if there is a sentence, it will make it easier for us, and we’ll do it.

AMLO also criticized the justification by judge Mónica Palomino regarding Ruiz’s sentence: simple homicide with defense abuse.

The judge’s defense is outrageous because she says that she could have used less force, that it was an “excess of legitimate defense”.

Roxana Ruiz is a young Oaxaca native who several years ago moved to the state of Mexico in order to improve her quality of life.

In May 2021, she was sexually abused in her home and she killed her assailant in self-defense.

Subsequently, she spent 9 months in prison until she was allowed a conditional release. Every week, she had to go to court and sign and notify police about her actions.

Despite this, on May 15, 2023, judge Mónica Palomino declared her guilty of the crime of simple homicide with defense abuse at the Neza-Bordo courthouses.

To this, Roxana Ruiz was blunt and said: “If I hadn’t defended myself, I would be the one who is dead.”

Meanwhile, Roxana’s attorney, Ángel Cabrera, stated that this sentence is not justified and claimed that Roxana won’t go back to prison.
