Take care of your dog! Tips to protect your pet this 4th of July from fireworks

Find out how to take care of your pet on July 4

The 4th of July is a few weeks away and with it, the arrival of thousands of fireworks displays. Though people like them, it is not so pleasant for animals, especially dogs who are more sensitive to loud noises such as explosions.

Fireworks can have serious effects on dogs and cause them to become upset, give them tachycardia, stress, or anxiety, make them escape due to panic, or cause them to die due to several of these factors.

This is why San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) will have a “Prepare Fair” that will offer free licenses, tags for pets, microchips, and consultations by the organization’s behavioral and training team.

This fair will take place on Saturday, June 24 at SDHS campus located at 550 Gaines Street from 10 AM to 2 PM. SDHS shared some tips regarding your pet for this holiday:

  • Give your pet a tag or plaque.
  • Microchip your dog. It should be noted that you can schedule an appointment for a free microchip at SDHS locations from June 13 to July 2, click here for more information.
  • Have your pets wear collars with labels with your pet’s name and contact information.
  • Visit your veterinarian so that they can give you proper medication to reduce stress and anxiety on pets.
  • Hire a pet sitter if you’re not at home on July 4.
  • Create a sanctuary or safe zone for pets where they can take shelter and protect themselves from noise and lights.
  • In case you’re going out, have your dog or pet on a leash.

It should be noted that, last year SDHS sheltered 275 pets (dogs, cats, and small animals) between July 4 and July 7, and only 16% of them were claimed or recovered by their owners, which is why it is essential to take care of your pets during this holiday season.
