Buying groceries is something that every family has to do when they need it (it can be weekly, biweekly, or monthly). However, regardless of how often this happens, price increases in items affect everyone every day, making it harder to get what you need at lower prices.

Weekly ranking of supermarkets in Mexico is revealed

In order to help Mexicans be informed, the head of the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, reveals weekly the highest and lowest prices in supermarkets all across Mexico, dividing the country into zones to correctly define the price ranges.

The Northern Zone of Mexico is comprised of the states of Baja California, Coahuila, Sonora, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, and Nuevo Leon.

This is Tijuana's cheapest market

In this week's list, it was determined that the Soriana Súper supermarket located at C. 17 Adolfo Ruiz Cortinez 377 in Colonia Libertad is Tijuana's cheapest supermarket as it offers the basic basket at a price of $876.80 pesos, and it is the "most consumer friendly" market in the state.

According to PROFECO, the basic basket consists of 24 products that can provide a family of 4 people for one week. The basic basket consists of the following items:

1. Edible vegetable oil 1 piece of 946 ml
2. Grains of rice 1 kg
3. Tuna flakes in oil (maximum 5% of soy) 2 cans of 140 g
4. Standard sugar 1 kg
5. Beef 1 kg
6. White onion 1 kg
7. Jalapeño pepper 1 kg
8. Pork 1 kg
9. Black beans 900 grams
10. Chicken eggs, 1 package of 18 eggs
11. Bar of soap 1 piece
12. Tomato 1 kg
13. Dairy milk 5 liters
14. Lime 1 kg
15. Apple 1 kg
16. Banana 1 kg
17. White bread 1 package of 680 grams
18. Potato 1 kg
19. Toilet paper 1 bag of 4 rolls
20. Pasta for soup 1 package of 220 grams
21. Chicken meat 1 kg
22. Sardines with tomato 1 can of 425g

Walmart at Plaza Galerías, Baja California's most expensive supermarket

Though Baja California had one of the lowest prices in the list, it also had one of the highest. This is because the Walmart located at Plaza Galerías Hipódromo in Tijuana was ranked 2nd among the most expensive supermarkets as it offers the basic basket at a price of $1,003.80 pesos.
