With the goal of benefitting the immigrant community in the northern border of Mexico, the 24th Municipal Administration of Tijuana, led by mayor Montserrat Caballero, has created labor alliances to benefit immigrants.

During a work meeting with Roberto Velazco Álvarez, Chief of the North American Unit of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the head of the Municipal Agency of Immigrant Assistance (DMAM), Enrique Lucero Vázquez, highlighted the importance of addressing issues such as forced internal displacement in Tijuana which represents 70% to 75% of the immigrant population that arrives in the city.

During this meeting where authorities of the three levels of government, the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego and international organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) all attended, challenges were addressed regarding immigration in this border.

He pointed out that among the nationalities of the immigrants that arrive in this region, Mexicans are the majority in this immigration flow which arrive here due to forced internal displacement. They represent 29.5% of expulsions from the United States, 31% of crossings with CBP One, and 75% of occupancy in Tijuana's shelters.

Lucero Vázquez pointed out the need to strengthen the network of more than 33 shelters that work together with the government of Tijuana and the awareness and outreach by federal, state, and municipal institutions regarding assistance for immigrants and refugees. Something else to work on, he said, is the access to housing and childcare centers, as when it comes to the displacement of these people, a great number of them are complete families or single mothers.

Lastly, he highlighted the importance of this meeting with high-level officials because it allows them all to share experiences and present proposals by authorities who directly address this part of the population regarding their mobility.

At the meeting, the following people were present: Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, Carlos Gonzalez; delegate of the National Institute of Immigration (INM) in Baja California, David Pérez Tejada; the subsecretary of Immigration Issues of the Government of Baja California, Adriana Minerva Nolasco Espinoza, and Dana Graber Ladek. In addition, María José Juárez, representative of IOM in Tijuana, Fernando Alonso Becerra, representative of UNICEF in Baja California; Belén Becerra, representative of UNHCR of Baja California, and Patricia Pinzón, Consul of Protection of the Consulate of Mexico in San Diego also attended.
