"El Sauzal de Rodríguez" Hacienda in Ensenada is declared cultural heritage of Baja California

On October 16, this was officially announced through a publication in the Official Diary of Baja California

The Cultural Heritage declaration of the "El Sauzal de Rodríguez" Hacienda, which is located in Ensenada, Baja California, was finally published, after an evaluation process, in the Official Diary of Baja California.

The declaration process began in November 2021 when Mr. José Enrique de Ibarra de Laba, as the only administrator of the company Compañía Inmobiliaria Mar de Cortez S.A. de C.V., owner of most of this property, requested the declaration.

During this process, several consultations and reviews took place. The Secretariat of Culture and director of the Institute of Culture of Baja California, Alma Delia Ábrego Ceballos, told the municipal president of Ensenada, Armando Ayala Robles, about the state of this property and requested avoiding issuing any demolition licenses.

Lastly, during a session of the Cultural Heritage Council in December 2022, the decision was made to authorize the declaration of this property with cadastral code ES-500-802, as property of Compañía Inmobiliaria Mar de Cortez S.A. de C.V.

The property is located at Ensenada-Tijuana s/n, Delegación El Sauzal de Rodríguez, 8 kilometers north of the city of Ensenada. This hacienda plays an essential role in the rich history of the region and it is now officially recognized and preserved as a cultural heritage part of Baja California.

It is an architectural monument of great importance to the urban landscape of Ensenada, Baja California. Built in 1930, its architecture has roofs with red tiles, stucco walls, semicircular arches, balconies with balustrade, Arab and Mudejar style lattice, Corinthian columns and Ionian elements, chimney towers, and French windows. The facade is asymmetrical and can be accessed through a staircase with flowerpots shaped like jars.

In 2015, Enrique Ibarra de Alba purchased the property and began to restore it, looking to preserve this important architectural monument as well as its historic legacy. The cultural heritage declaration request for the house of Abelardo L. Rodríguez is an attempt to conserve this valuable record of regional and national history.

Alma Delia Ábrego pointed out that the "declaration of the Sauzal de Rodríguez Hacienda as Cultural Heritage honors the memory of this important character and strengthens the region's commitment in preserving its history and culture. This declaration is a deserved acknowledgement of the rich heritage of the area and an important step to protect heritage."

General Abelardo L. Rodríguez was an important figure in the history of Mexico, especially in the border region and Baja California. During his administration as governor, from 1923 to 1929, he faced against economic and infrastructure challenges in the region. He implemented policies that promoted demographic and economic growth, including the creation of agricultural colonies, the inauguration of casinos and bars due to Prohibition in the US, and the construction of important education facilities.

In addition, he promoted the industry of fish packages in El Sauzal and contributed to the development of the port of Ensenada. The construction of the dam that carries his name was also a significant achievement, providing potable water for Tijuana.
