The San Diego Humane Society has provided new updates on the Villa Chardonnay case, which began when the sanctuary came under investigation for alleged neglect and poor living conditions. That inquiry ultimately led to the rescue of more than 700 animals from the property.
Over the past three days, teams of volunteers successfully transported 54 horses from the Villa Chardonnay grounds to the Willow Glen Equestrian Center in El Cajon. According to the Humane Society, this transfer marks a crucial step in the animals’ rehabilitation following the discovery of their dire health conditions.

An additional 4 horses were moved to the San Diego Humane Society’s campus in Escondido, where they will continue to receive specialized medical treatment and behavioral support.
“Moving these horses is an important step forward in their recovery. This new location allows us to continue providing the individualized care they need in a safer, more efficient setting while also making it easier for our teams to support them, and potential adopters to give them the new lives they deserve,” they stated.
The broader rescue effort now encompasses more than 700 animals, many of whom were found suffering from a range of health issues, including malnutrition, severe weight loss, untreated wounds, and contagious infections such as ringworm and giardiasis.
