"Los Zetas" drug cartel leader arrested in Mexico

The arrest was made without "a single shot fired"

MEXICO. - The Mexican drug lord Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, leader of Los Zetas cartel and one of Mexico's most wanted criminal was arrested yesterday in the northeast part Mexico, , official sources confirmed.

Morales, a.k.a "Z40" was arrested in a raid near the town of Nuevo Laredo, said Eduardo Sanchez, Mexico's Security Cabinet spokesman, at a press conference.

The information released by Sanchez, who had been anticipated by local media quoting unnamed sources, said that the arrest was made without "a single shot fired".

Sanchez added that along with Morales, two other persons were arrested, and who were identified as Abdon Rodriguez Garcia and Ernesto Reyes Garcia, who were accompanying him in a vehicle that the drug lord was traveling in.

Sanchez also said that one of the men was Morales bodyguard and the other one worked in the financial structure of the criminal group, who are considered to be one of the bloodiest in Mexico.

Morales was under surveillance in the area where he was eventually arrested by the Navy, as he traveled in a vehicle 27 miles southwest of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

Seized in this operation were $2 million dollars, eight guns and about 500 rounds of ammunition, said Sanchez.

Morales had seven arrest warrants that were issued by federal judges for crimes such as organized crime, homicide, drug crimes, money laundering, torture and possession of a firearm that is for Army use only, said Sanchez.

The Security spokesman said the investigation that led to this arrest coincided with the start of the Government of Enrique Peña Nieto, which began last December, and acknowledged that the Navy had a "key role" in the capture.
