Can FIFA really pass judgement on Mexico fans for "PUTO" chant

FIFA has opened an investigation for possible homophobic insults in "Puto" chant.

We are right in the middle of the greatest sporting event in the world, an event that only happens every four years, the FIFA World Cup. Born in 1904 in Paris, France, FIFA oversees and governs over soccer worldwide. Now, in the middle of their flagship event, they consider handing down rulings according to their own moral standards.

The problem is that FIFA has no clear moral standards.

Mexicans soccer fans have had a long standing tradition to yell "EEEEEEEH PUTOOOO" at opposing goalkeepers during goal kicks. The term "Puto" can have a variety of definitions; all of which are insulting.

The traveling Mexican fans have used this trademark chant during their visit in Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup including the match against host nation Brazil. The Brazilian fans responded by screaming out the same chant when the Mexican goalkeeper took his goal kicks.

This is not the first time the Mexican fans have inspired the opposing fan base. This same chant by the Mexican fans during matches in the United States against the U.S. Men's National Team also inspired the Yanks to scream out "You're an Asshole" during the opposition's goal kick.

As this chant begins to spread further and further in the World, FIFA is now investigating the chants for "Possible 'homophobic' insults".

If FIFA determine that the chant is indeed homophobic - in their eyes - fans could be banned from using the popular chant and federations could face sanctions if the fans continue to use the chant.

With this, FIFA - a football federation - is trying to tell the world what is right, and what is wrong. Is this really their job?

Racism and homophobia are two big issues that the planet faces and common sense guidelines are needed. Discrimination must not be allowed anywhere, especially in the world most popular sport. But how far is this going to be taken?

Are we prepared to start allowing FIFA to ignore a basic human right which is that of free-speech?

Fans from all over the world pay a lot money to attend World Cup and to cheer and support their team in their own ways. They do not pay all of the money to go and have an organization tell them that something that is so culturally ingrained is wrong and immoral.

The "Puto" chant is something that has been heard all over every Mexican stadium from lower divisions to the top flight for years.

NO CLEAR MORAL STANDARDS

FIFA is now investigating if this Mexican cultural soccer ritual is wrong and immoral towards people of homosexual orientation. The problem with FIFA passing judgement on Mexican fans is that they have no clear moral guidelines to this issue.

If FIFA was clearly against homophobia they would have already acted against Russia and several Middle Eastern countries. Russia as well as the Middle Eastern countries have some strict anti-homosexual laws that clearly discriminate against homosexuals.

Instead of taking a clear stance against them, FIFA has awarded Russia and a Middle Eastern country (Qatar) the next editions of the FIFA World Cup.
