First Lady involved in Ayotzinapa case sentenced to prison

María de los Ángeles Pineda follows the footsteps of her husband

MEXICO.- "The reappearance of the 43 teacher trainees, alive, and justice against those responsible" has been been the demand from parents of the disappeared students from Ayotzinapa have begged for months. This is an appeal that hasn't seen satisfying resolutions the first time around, but it has now in recent days, after revealing this Monday that Iguala's First Lady in the state of Guerrero, María de los Ángeles Pineda Villa, has been sentenced to prison sixty days after her arrest warrant was issued.

Pineda Villa was arrested alongside her husband, José Luis Abarca, in Novemeber, far removed from the luxury lives that they were accustomed to. They were found among filth, little money and loneliness. The former mayor and his first lady, were searched as alleged suspects and responsible for giving the order of executing the 43 students.

According to the official version, issued by the Attorney General's Office of Mexico, the family ties they held with the cartel Guerreros Unidos was what made the kidnappings easier for all those involved, so that her speech as DIF President wasn't sabotaged by the students. Her husband gave the order to municipal policemen, having her as their connection with the cartel.

Some media reports also state that she even had members of this criminal group under payroll. And although, she couldn't be accounted as a direct responsible of the Ayotzinapa case, the evidence found was enough to link her with the cartel involved in the September 26 masacre. Another charge against her is use of resources of illicit origin, given that she couldn't confirm the source of her millionaire income.

Some of the data that emerged after the sentence, which was issued by a jury of the State of Mexico, said that the former Fist Lady was part of the cartel Guerreros Unidos, since 2005 at least.
