Tijuana, Less Violent Than Detroit and New Orleans

Mexico has more insecure communities than USA and Colombia

MEXICO.- During a recent survey on the fifty most violent cities worldwide, the outcomes were quite interesting regarding public safety, especially when talking about the prejudices the world has towards countries such as Mexico and Colombia, given their history of drug trafficking and their fights against it.

Coming in at first place, for a fourth year in a row, the deadliest city is San Pedro Sula (Honduras), registering 171.20 homicides per every 100,000 residents. In second and third place are Caracas and Acapulco, according to the list's ranking where we can place Tijuana in number 45, with 29.90 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

Even though Tijuana is among the most violent cities in the world, it's still safer than the four United States cities that appeared on the list: St.Louis (19), Detroit (22), New Orleans (28) and Baltimore (40). Although on the flip-side, it is important to point out that Mexico figures among the top ten most dangerous cities. A really high number, higher than Colombia and just below Brazil who has nineteen cities featured in the ranking.

Despite the numbers in the Mexican and Colombian violence rates, the siteSeguridad, Justicia y Paz (Security, Justice and Peace) acknowledges that when comparing 2014 figures with previous years, it's possible to identify the significant decreases in the list, with the highest reduction being Torréon, Coahuila, going from 54.24 to 27.81 homicides per 100,000.

Some additions to this 2014 ranking, compared to last year were Teresina, Porto Alegre y Curitiba, all Brazilian cities. Obregón from the state of Sonora in Mexico, also joined the list. On the other hand, the cities that stopped being mentioned on the list were Santa Marta from Colombia; San Juan from Puerto Rico; Maracaibo from Venezuela and Puerto Príncipe from Haiti.
