Starting August 1, 2026, travelers will see a major boost in travel options between San Diego and Tokyo, as Japan Airlines (JAL) upgrades its service from four weekly flights to daily nonstop departures year-round.

The announcement, made jointly by San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Japan Airlines, comes in response to a sharp rise in passenger demand.

Currently operating four round-trip flights per week between SAN and Tokyo’s Narita International Airport, JAL will now offer daily connections, giving passengers greater flexibility and convenience.

Those flying from San Diego will also be able to connect through Narita to 13 additional destinations across Asia.

“JAL has operated nonstop service between San Diego and Tokyo since 2012,” said Atif Saeed, President and CEO, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “Since the route launched, more than 30 Japanese companies have invested approximately $8.7 billion in San Diego County. With deep economic and defense ties between our regions, increased air service will further strengthen these valuable relationships.”

Between 2023 and 2025, travel between the two destinations surged by 42%, prompting the airline to expand its offerings.

Tickets for the new daily flights are now available for purchase through jal.com.
