U.S. President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy on Monday, October 19, after declaring that the state of New Mexico should be renamed “New America.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that dropping the state’s historic name would bring “great value and prestige,” claiming the shift would boost home values and raise income levels for residents.

He added that the name change would also help make “crooked” elections honest again, asserting, “We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America.”
This is not the first time Trump has proposed renaming geographically significant locations. Earlier in his term, he directed efforts to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” and more recently signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
