The El Chaparral bridge in Tijuana, officially known as the Mexico Bridge, has reopened to traffic after a week of continuous maintenance work aimed at repairing damage to the structure.
The bridge was closed for seven days while crews worked around the clock to replace its expansion joints, restoring traffic through an important route near the El Chaparral area.
The work was carried out after reports from residents prompted authorities to inspect the bridge and determine what repairs were needed.
$1.2 million pesos invested in repairs
The repair project cost approximately 1.2 million pesos (about $68,000) and is expected to benefit more than 40,000 people who use the area.
Before the work began, municipal authorities reviewed the bridge alongside Civil Protection and the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Department to assess its condition and determine the appropriate intervention.
The main repair involved replacing an expansion joint, a component designed to allow a bridge to withstand movement caused by factors such as temperature changes and traffic.
Barriers installed beneath the bridge
Authorities also addressed conditions beneath the structure, where people had been staying and where a fire-related incident contributed to damage to the expansion joint.
Workers installed barriers to restrict access beneath the bridge, with the goal of preventing further damage and extending the lifespan of the newly repaired component.
City officials said the measures are intended to reduce the risk of vandalism and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas beneath the structure.
El Chaparral bridge is back open
The reopening restores traffic through a key route used to help relieve congestion around the El Chaparral area.
With the seven-day maintenance project completed, drivers can once again use the bridge as authorities continue working to maintain infrastructure in one of Tijuana’s busiest transportation areas.
